Information about Sibenik

Sibenik, a historical place earlier inhabited by the Illyrian tribe Dalmats, played an important
part in Croatia's history, past and present. It is also important in regards to the development of
tourism in the region.
It lies near the mouth of the Krka river, which is well known for its waterfalls
of astonishing natural beauty, and is one of eight national parks in Croatia.

The town of Sibenik is surrounded with many fortifications, as it had to defend itself from many
conquerors.

Its fate in history was such that the reigns of power changed hands often, each master
leaving his mark on the town and its surroundings. It is special, particularly because of the harmony
of the old and modern architecture.
The most important cultural monument is St Jacob's Cathedral, masterpiece of Croatian construction
and under UNESCO protection.
In front of Sibenik there are numerous islands of which the best known and the largest is Murter.
Tourism in the Sibenik region with its wonderful Riviera is well developed.
