About

145 km long, 10-30 km wide, 1.758 km high: the imposing Velebit is more than a change from the otherwise coastal dominated landscape of Dalmatia – it is a world of its own. The huge limestone mountains not only offer lynxes, vultures and bears a home, but also serve as a playground for free climbers, hikers, mountain bikers and picnic-goers.

Although only the northern part (109 sq km) has been a Croatia park of nature since 1999, the entire mountain range has been part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. And so that the unique landscape is preserved for future generations, the road network is quite poor, but the hiking trails are well labeled and numerous.
